27 June 1887 — La Punta, Longarone
Monday. 27th [June 1887]. Got up at 7 & at 7.15 we started for Zoldo. I & Henry in a little carriage belonging to Malcolm– The girls in another with Malcolm on the box. It was raining as we started but cleared up en route & we saw the mountains very well. When we got to Torno di Zoldo we had coffee & then Henry & the 2 girls went to Upper Zoldo to pay the Bosanquets a visit. I took a walk in the woods picking flowers & searching for the large yellow lilies of which we only found one growing wild– I got back to the hotel at 1.30 & at 2 the others had returned & we lunched. Then I & the girls set off with my fishing rod to have a cast or two for a trout but saw nothing & finally the girls took off their shoes & stockings to paddle in the river till we found it was past 4 & we hurried back to the hotel. It threatened a storm & Henry & Malcolm were anxious to start back. The horses were put to but our coachman could not be found—after a deal of running abt he was discovered & we started & came a tremendous pace home & got to La Punta by 6.30. Had tea. Dined at 8 & after dinner had coffee in the arbour where a lamp was lit. Lady Louisa Legge who arrived at Longarone on her way to Cortina today came down to see us & returned to her hotel about 10.30 when after a game or two of patience we all went to bed. Today on the road home from Zoldo we passed a lot of pilgrims returning from Zoldo where there had been a procession & prayers for rain. The pilgrims were mostly women each carrying an umbrella which I supposed they expected to have to use at once.
