3 July 1887 — Zurich | |
Sunday. 3rd July [1887]. I got up late & packed & abt 11 I went to the hotel garden where I found Henry & the girls & from where we could see & hear the ceremonies of the day of the formal opening of the bridge. There was a kind of pulpit erected & from it a band master directed the combined bands. Then a chorus was sung. After wh a gentleman mounted the pulpit & made a speech—but we were too far from it to profit & we merely understood that the speaker was going to offer a crown of laurels to someone (probably the architect) which he did. There was another piece of music, another chorus & lastly a hymn sung to the air of our God save the Queen. Then the crowd dispersed probably to dine. At ¼ to 1 we had lunch & then left Zurich by the 2.30 train for Lucerne. It was a slow train & it was very hot. We got to Lucerne & went to H. National where we had ordered rooms. I unpacked. Henry took the girls off to see the Lion. Table d’hôte at 7½. Nela, Henry & I went to it. After dinner we discovered Mme de Bülow wife of the former Danish minister in England. Sat in the vestibule with her & had coffee. At 9 went up & sat on the balcony. A splendid moonlight night– Saw at this hotel the Emperor & Russia’s morganatic widow & sons & daughter—Pss & children. Patience—& bed early. | |
