4 July 1887 — Lucerne
Monday. 4th July [1887]. Henry took the girls to the Rigi by 10 o’clock steamer. I wrote letters till abt 11 when Mme de Bülow came up to my room & sat with us & had a chat. At 12.30 we went down to table d’hôte lunch & then I returned again to my room, read & worked until 5 when I went to Mme de Bülow’s room & we went out together. We went first to a sweet shop & I had tea & she ices & then we went & shopped & came back to the hotel about 6 & found Henry & the girls returned & sat out on the balcony. It was very hot & stormy. We dined at table d’hôte at about 7.30 & found the Americans just finishing dinner & giving congratulatory speeches. Henry & I & Mme de Bülow dined, the girls had tea upstairs. After dinner I sat in the vestibule talking with Mme de Bülow & came up at 9.30 when there were fireworks for the Americans & then a dance. I heard the music till about 12. A lovely moonlight night.
