19 July 1887 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 19th [July 1887]. After writing my letters at about 11 I started off to see Lady Eastlake; going up Portland Place I met Nelly Alderson & she promised to go shopping with me in the afternoon. I went to a chemists & left my smelling bottle to be refilled & thence went to Lady Eastlake. She was visible & I spent an hour with her very pleasantly. She talked to me of the project of a niece of hers of going to Venice to set up a lodging house which I told her was a very good idea & I promised to help as far we could. I walked home & calling in at the chemist to fetch my bottle there I met Blanche & her children so we came on together. Addie Tavistock & Rachel Gurney came to lunch & Morelli came also to see them. Addie left at 3. Had a visit from Genl & Lady Dickson & then Nelly came & we walked out together, shopped & returned here to tea at 5. Then we ran out again & got some trimming for my gown & returned & put it on that I might wear the dress this eveng. This we accomplished & Nelly helped me to dress before she returned to Langham House. Henry & I went to dine with Mr Clark 44 Berkeley Square. met there Mrs & Miss Thornhill, Genl & Mrs Benson, Mr & Mrs Knight & Mr Malcock (author of the New Republic). Mrs Knight sat near Mr Clark at dinner & as I sat on his left I could hear all her talk & she chattered the whole time & very amusingly. Her great theme was abuse of Gladstone & also of Lady Sebright & I think both deserved it. The young Clarks were at the dinner. Blanche Clark did the honors.
