20 July 1887 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 20th July [1887]. Being called at 7 I got up & washed Henry’s hair for him & then washed my own before breakfast. At 10 Henry, Morelli & I walked off to the Royal Academy & there met Mr Frizzoni & Herr Koopmann & we went over it together. There was nothing very attractive except a picture of puppies by Hunt & some good watercolours. Henry & I came home & in the Burlington Arcade we met Mr Ffrench whom we had not seen for some time. I went to see Blanche at No 12 & then home, rested & dressed & Nela came & she, Henry & I went off to lunch at the German Embassy. At 3 we went with Hatzfeldt & his girl “Baby” to the National Gallery, there while the others went round I sat & talked first to Col. Crealock & then to Sir F. Burton until Morelli & Dr J. T. Richter came then I left & went to 41 Hans Place to Lady Lindsays to help her with a Jubilee workhouse tea wh she was giving. I found her hall & dining room full of old men & women enjoying a good meal. After tea we took half of the company up to the drawing room to see the performance of some wise birds directed by a little French lady. They pulled up cards & told us the days of the week &c & delighted the old folk. Then we got up the rest of the party & they saw the performance. Mrs Moncrieff sang to them to the piano & guitar & then bran tubs were brought & the old people fished up their prizes & were delighted. Mrs Moncrieff led off God save the Queen in which all joined & then gave 3 cheers. One old man gave 3 cheers for Lady Lindsay & then we began to get them ready to go. Four cabs were found for the most infirm & the rest walked & went away enchanted. At the door each had a slice of cake & a few flowers given them. It was 7 when I got into a cab & went off home. Mama came [to] see about Lady Campbell of Blytheswoods exhibition of women’s work. She wants me to help in Italy to send over work. Blanche dined with us—& we went to bed early as I was quite tired out.
