23 July 1887 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Saturday. 23rd [July 1887]. Spent the morning helping Mrs Rate to arrange the furniture in her drawing room. In afternoon we drove out some in the carriage, the rest in the poney carriage to the Wotton Woods where we had a picnic tea & then a walk. There were masses of tall willow herb in flower & the woods were lovely. We got back to dinner rather late. Mr Meredith the poet & his daughter dined there. Mr M. is a stiff pompous prigish kind of creature—talking farce—his daughter a pretty, natural little girl—a curious contrast.
