25 July 1887 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 25th [July 1887]. Mr Poynter left abt 9 for London. Henry & I went to the station for the 11.40 train but had to wait 1½ hour for it on account of its being the train from Portsmouth bringing many back from the Naval Review. Instead therefore of getting to Queen Anne St for usual lunch time it was nearly 3 before we got there. We found a telegram awaiting us from Ct Seckendorff telling us to dine with the Crown Princess of Germany this evening & Morelli also. We sent word that Morelli was gone & that we would be there. Fred Layard came with bad news of Mrs Austen’s state. He said he had never seen her looking so ill. I went to see Mama to tell her we had to throw over our engagement to dine with her. Did some shopping & then returned home to tea very tired. Mrs Burr came at 6. Then Maria & then Mama & the 2 latter sat with me while I dressed for dinner & at 20 to 8 we drove off to Buckingham Palace. Besides the Crown Princess there was Count Seckendorff, Countess Papencher lady in waiting & Lord Edward Clinton in waiting also & only 6 of us. The Princess was very happy & lively & after dinner took us into the next room bidding us carry the candles, to show us the pictures—the room not being prepared. We went to the drawing room with the Chinese Pagodas which had been brought from the Brighton Pavillion built by George III, the Chippendale furniture also from the same. At ¼ to 10 she went away saying she would not keep us as she knew we were to start for Ireland early tomorrow. Ola & Nela came to see us to say goodbye also Connie just as we were going to bed.
