12 August 1887 — Coole Park, Gort, County Galway
Friday. 12th August [1887]. Up at 7.30 & wrote before breakfast (12.30). Afterwards wrote a long letter to Edgar to congratulate him on his marriage to a Mrs Graham which he announced in a letter I received from him fm New Caledonia yesterday. He says he cannot live alone & that his dear lost Darling wished him to marry again & had pointed out the person. I doubt that this is one of the delusions which a man cherishes when he had made up his mind to do the deed. I am not astonished & had even offered to take the bet that he would marry again—last year before I left Norway. We had settled to drive over to Lough Rainy to see old Mr Wm O’Hara but it came on to pour & we were in doubt as to whether we could go. It cleared abt 1.30 so we decided to go having Sir Wm at home. As we passed thro’ Gort we saw Lord Gough & also a great procession of a circus now on show—there was a poor little young elephant in the show which was a great attraction. We drove past Lough Cutra & then came to a bare boggy country with distant hills. We had one tremendous shower on the way which was so sudden that we had no time to get on our water proofs. We reached Mr O’Haras abt 3.30. His house is beautifully situated down on the lake & his appronet was planted with beautiful shrubs & trees. The old gentleman received us most hospitably. He had to meet us a curate Mr Tatton. As soon as we came lunch was ordered & in the meanwhile we went a tour round the garden which was full of curious & beautiful shrubs– Our host is a great gardener & the place being very sheltered and the soil good he manages to grow many shrubs one sees no where else. He very kindly gave me a lot of cuttings to send to Theo. Abt 4 we went in to lunch & had an excellent meal. We had grouse which had been shot this morning—excellent green peas of his own growing—small trout caught in the river close by—in fact quite a dinner. We took another turn in the garden & at ¼ 6 started off back to Coole. We drove thro’ Lough Cutra park & reached Coole at a little before 8. Had some tea– Patience.
