17 August 1887 — Kylemore Castle, nr. Recess, County Galway
Wednesday. 17th August [1887]. The weather was fine again & the view over the lake from my window was lovely when I got up this morning. We breakfasted at 9.15 & about 11 I was invited to go & fish. I was introduced to the old fisherman Mr John Seiden & he took me on the small lake called the pool. There was not eno’ wind but I rose a salmon & caught a few trout. After 2 oclock lunch we all walked up to the garden which is about a mile further on. The flowers are most beautiful & owing to the mild climate & fine soil they grow with great luxuriance. Everywhere the hedges were of red fuchsia which grows to a big bush. There are an immense quantity of glass houses—vineries, peach houses, fig houses, banana & pine houses—& beautiful flowers. The carriage fetched us & we drove back to the castle. The castle is built so close to the mountains & lake that there was absolutely no room for the garden nearer which is a pity as it is too far off to enjoy. We dined at 8 & bed at 11.
