19 August 1887 — Kylemore Castle, nr. Recess, County Galway
Friday. 19th August [1887]. Altho the day was far too fine to hope to catch fish I went in the morning to have a few casts & got a single trout. After luncheon the Gregorys & Henry & I went for a drive with Mr Mitchell Henry in a kind of char a banc. We went up the valley towards Recess and round the back of the mountain over Kylemore by 2 lovely little lakes. Lough Mask is one. On a promontory there is a cottage belonging to Lady Wilde the mother of the well known Oscar Wilde the would be poet. We came round by the sea & had most splendid view. The sea was perfectly calm & the many islands to be seen gave very much the effect of a Norwegian fjord. We came back by Mr Mitchell Henry’s farms & saw what he had done by reclaiming the bog & what might be done in Ireland with money & the spirit of enterprise. We got in a very short time before dinner. After dinner we sat in the ball room & listened to the music of the orchestrion a large organ played by machinery. The room is a fine one with a music gallery & it is also used for theatricals. As nearly all the ladies had a headache today we were not sorry when bed time came. Lord Normandy was still laid up with a gastric attack but pronounced by our host who was educated as a Dr to be better. Mr Henry Henn arrived—a parson.
