20 August 1887 — Kylemore Castle, nr. Recess, County Galway
Saturday. 20th August [1887]. Another brilliant day so that it was almost folly to have gone down to the pool as we did Augusta & I in the morning– Of course we got nothing & at 12 came away & finding Sir Wm Gregory walked with him up to the gardens, picked flowers for our evening decorations & got an excellent bunch of grapes to eat from the gardener. We returned for lunch at 2. Afterwards I went on the lake for trout got 2 & rose 2 salmon but it was hopeless for we could see the fish come up look at the fly & quietly depart. One we saw following the fly a great way. Came in to tea at 5 & found Lord Mulgrave had arrived—a high church parson—& also a Mr Bartlett an artist. Lord Normanby is better & came down to lunch. Great excitement prevailed among the gentlemen at the arrival of news that the Land League has been proclaimed. I made a sketch before dinner. After dinner we sat in the billiard room & had music. Mr Bartlett is a good musician, sang & played the piano very well.
