26 August 1887 — Kylemore Castle, nr. Recess, County Galway
Friday. 26th August [1887]. We woke to a pouring wet morning—the wind whistling & roaring in the chimney & such wild weather that Mr Henn came to our door at 7 A.M. to suggest that it was too wet for us to set off & that Blanche would never come over to Ireland in such a storm as was raging. After deliberating we thought we would risk it so we breakfasted & set off in Mr Henn’s omnibus. It was terrible weather and the water was coming down from the hills in cascades & waterfalls & the roads were flooded—but we got on to where we changed horses and then the weather began to open a little & by the time we reached Westport it was quite fine. We found that the tire of one of our wheels was nearly off & it was fortunate that we should have got safe– On getting a newspaper we found that Lord Doneraile was dying from the bite of a pet fox. We had met Lady Doneraile in Paris last Feby when he was under Dr Pasteur’s treatment wh in this case seems not to have been successful. We reached Dublin about 6 P.M. & found the Shelbourne crowded on account of the horse show but we got rooms & dined at the table d’hôte & went to bed early.
