19 October 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 19th October [1887]. Most lovely weather. Miss Maxwell went out at 10 & at ¼ past Kate & I went off to the Edens & got into their steam launch & Mr Eden & Carry took us out for a charmg giro round out at sea to Torcello. It was a perfect day & the sun quite hot. We took our lunch with us & at abt 12 we stopped in the canal of Torcello & mooring ourselves to a tree began our lunch. There came such a quantity of wasps that we had to unmoor ourselves & drift away to get rid of them. After lunch Kate, Carry & I went into the church wh we found in a greater state of dilapidation than ever. It is really sad to see the wooden stalls dropping for want of a few nails & a little care & all the nice things in the church disappearing by degrees. There were a good many locusts flying about in the islands & we were amused at seeing a flock of turkeys greatly excited by one of their number having caught one. He was at once pursued by the whole flock screaming as they ran. We picked a few Michelmas daisies & then returned to the launch & Mr Eden & set off home. We got home at 3 & then Kate & I set off & walked to the Piazza & back & did a little shopping. After 5 at tea had a visit from Mr Haseltine, also from Mr & Mrs Browning. Kate went to dine with the Hurtados. We played patience after dinner.
