12 November 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 12th [November 1887]. Modelled before breakfast & after– Mama read aloud to me. After lunch we went to the Edens garden. Cecil went out with Mr Brown in his sandalo. It was a lovely day a real S. Martin’s summer day. Henry & Kate walked from from the Stabto. Mama & I left some cards. Just before dinner I got an answer from Georgie about the Crown Prince at San Remo– It gives a very sad account. The cancer has declared itself and the Doctors are unanimous on that. Dismay is in the hearts of all—“The Crown Prince is admirable & after one day of nervous excitement is calm &c. No pain thank God! only much inconvenience from a full throat & no voice!” We were dreadfully upset by this letter. I at once wrote to the Crown Pss & to Georgie– Mr Malcolm & Mr Jamison our chaplain dined with us & after dinner we chose the hymns for tomorrow service as I have to play Mrs Menzies being ill.
