18 November 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 18th [November 1887]. It was not very fine but still we thought we could go to Padua. We breakfasted at 8 & went off by 9.15 train. We went to Giotto’s chapel, to the Ersinitani, to the Santo where services were going on & the organ, a fine one, playing. We stayed there a long time & when we came out it was raining & very cold. We went to the Chapel of S. George, & to the Scuola– Then to the Town Hall, the University & also in search of an antiquary. We found one but he had neither cards or fans or prints but he directed us to the house of a certain Count Gustinian who he said had such things & sold them. We drove to a large house & went in & were shown a lot of rubbish which the servant said was on sale—but there was nothing of interest to Mama so we went to the station & ordering some cholocati—eat some lunch we had brought with us while it was making—& so refreshed returned to Venice by 2.44 train. It was raining a little all the afternoon. Cecil & Kate walked home from the station. M. & Mme Pilat & Maria Cozzi & Ersilia came to tea. Kate & I practised duetts after dinner while Henry & Mama played patience.
