14 January 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 14th January [1888]. Henry had a bad cold & did not go out. We had a message from Serguso that he wanted to show Henry something & after lunch Ola & I went & found he had a lot of wooden blocks for printing playing cards—abt 300 cards in all. He asked 250 fcs & we bought them for Mama’s collection. It was a horridly cold damp day & a fog came. The tide was very low & we could not get thro’ the small canals. In fact we landed at the Campo S. Via & walked to the Zattere in order to have tea with Mrs Brown. There were a good many people there notwithstanding the weather but we were glad to get home. After dinner Mlle Cozzi called for me & took me to Countess Marcello whom I had not seen since all her trouble about her son Andrea who [as] an officer in the Army had refused to fight a duel & was turned out. He since volunteered as a common soldier to go to Massanah & is now there. His [mother] looks ill & worn & has lost all her beauty.
