22 January 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 22nd January [1888]. Ola & I went to the service at the Grand Hotel in the morning & then I went to bid Miss Ames & Miss Witherell good bye at the Pension Suisse. Came home & lunched at 1.30. Mr Brown came to lunch & then Henry, Ola, Mr B & I started in the gondola for the Lido. Unfortunately there was no sunshine but it was fine & not so cold. We landed at Sa Elisabetta & walked to the shore & then along the sands as far as we could. We picked up black cockleshells to make a necklace for Ola– We were rather pestered by Burano fishermen who begged & to two of whom Henry incautiously gave a trifle– They were persistent & aggravating. We sat on the stones of the breakwater & then turned back to walk to the gondola– We warmed up our coffee and had it in the gondola on the way home. A lot of people came to tea with us at 5. Lady Galway, Mr Malcolm & Mr Brown dined with us. Olga Mocenigo came in the eveng. Ola played the piano.
