2 February 1888 — Rome | |
Thursday. 2nd February [1888]. I stayed in bed all the morning to rest. After lunch Augusta Gregory came to see me & took me out with her for a little walk & left me at Via due Macelli 60 where I found Lady Bagot at home & sat & had a chat with her. It is the first time we had met since her husband died—& the last time we saw each other was when she stayed with us at Venice. She talked of all her trouble & we were both sad. I went on to the Hotel Victoria to tea with the Gregorys & met a great many old friends the Lanciani’s &c & made fresh acquaintances, Father Nugent an Irish priest, Miss Dixon an American &c. At the table d’hôte we sat with Sir Benson & Lady Maxwell & Emily—& next us Mr Newdigate & Mr Wallop. | |
