14 February 1888 — Rome | |
Tuesday. 14th [February 1888]. I went with Henry to call on Sir John Savile & found him at home. I lunched with the Bagots & returning to the Hotel met Henry, Sir Wm & Mr Cartwright. Henry & I went with Ola & Lilah in our little carriages to St Agnese to see the church & Baptistery & then returned to see the end of the carnival. There was a balcony hired between several of us in the Corso & Lady Louisa Legge kindly provided the tea. There were very few carriages in the Corso but a crowd of roughs. The balconies were pretty full & when I got there there was a good show of moccoletti & we had some fun trying to extinguish each others & keep one’s own alight. Henry & I dined with Mr & Mrs Kennedy & met Mrs Bruce & the Portuguese Minister & his wife, the American Minister Mr Stotts & Mr & Mrs Cartwright. Henry says they found Mr Stotts most amusing. It appears he is a German by birth & not much used to society. He told them he could not imagine why he had been made Minister as he knew nothing about diplomacy but he was very entertaining & clever & has written various philosophical books. | |
