15 February 1888 — Rome
Wednesday. 15th February [1888]. Ash Wednesday. Lady Bagot & Lilah came to fetch us & we went to the American Church– Lilah & Ola went to the Vatican together. I walked with Lady Bagot back to the hotel. After lunch Sir Wm came & we drove with him to 16 Piazza Ara Cali to see Signor Pietri who has cards & books & saw some wh we thought wd suit Mama. From there we walked back the Corso & went to see Mr Borocco who has a collection of antique sculpture & was anxious to know what Henry thought of some Assyrian pieces he has. Henry thought one large piece genuine & 2 small ones false. He has some very pretty heads, greek & Etruscan. Mme Minghetti was there to meet us & I walked with her. We called on Mme de Westenberg & found her at home & then we went on to Mme Minghetti’s & I sat a little while with her & then went on to bid the Sermonetas adieu & then went back to the hotel in a cab. It had rained all the afternoon. Dined at table d’hôte & afterwards the Maxwells, Mr Newdigate, Mr Wallop & Lilah Bagot came & spent the evening with us. We turned Henry’s dressing room into a 2nd drawing room & there had tea & I played & sang to the guitar.
