20 February 1888 — Naples
Monday. 20th [February 1888]. Henry & Ola went to the Museum. I remained at home, wrote, worked & practised guitar– Showery. Sir Charles Newton called just after lunch. He is staying H. des Etrangers. Mrs Eden & Miss Bronson came at 2.30 & drove with Henry & Ola to see Herculaneum. I remained at home waiting to be fetched by Princess d’Abro to go & see the things chosen for the Glasgow Exhibition– After waiting in vain Luigi came to say the porter thinking I was out had sent the Pss away. It was very provoking. Mr Newdigate arrived from Rome & dined at our table. We dined at 6½ at table d’hôte. The hotel is badly managed & we regret we came to it. The table d’hôte is interminable– We all 3 went to a Philharmonic Concert for which Princess Cariati sent us invitations. We heard Tamagno sing & when they encored he sang the “addio” from Othello & was tremendously applauded. His voice was too loud for a concert room but was very dramatic. All the elite of Naples was at the concert in full dress & diamonds. We left early & had hardly got to the hotel when a terrific storm began of thunder & hail. News of the death of Count Corti.
