22 February 1888 — Naples
Wednesday. 22nd [February 1888]. We had hoped to go to Pompei but it was rained a perfect deluge. Henry & Ola went to Museum. I sat by the fire & wrote & practised guitar. Sir C. Newton came & lunched with us. At 2.30 we 3 went in an open carriage to Posillipo to leave cards on Princess d’Abro who was out. We called on Sir James Lacaita & I went up to see him. He looks ill & has a dreadful cough. Went to Grand Hotel & found the Edens & Bronsons at home & Mrs Bronson in bed. We went & sat with her. Left Ola at the Bristol & Henry & I went on to see Mme de Montfort & there found also her sister Mme de Weisweiller. The Montforts live at the Villa Lydia just above this hotel—we went on to Villa Beatrice & saw Mrs Montgomery. The weather looked finer & the moon came out. Ola had a headache & went to bed at 7. Mr Newdigate dined with us at 8 & Mr Wallop arrived from Rome & also joined us. Dressed after dinner & Henry & I went to a party at Princess Gerace’s who lives in same house as the Cariati and where there were a great many smart people. Saw there M. d’Ehrenhoff who has retired from diplomacy & come to live at Naples. Made acquaintance with Ct & Css Balbi of Genoa. She was daughter of Css Sommariva an old friend of Henry’s youth at Florence. When we came out of Pss Gerace’s house we found it was pouring & we fear there will be no expedition to Pompei tomorrow. Pss Gerace was very kind & hospitable; she is middle aged & rather stout; speaks English & French well. I wrote to Mlle Perpigna for news.
