25 February 1888 — Naples
Saturday. 25th [February 1888]. Ola seemed quite well and it was fine so we settled to go off to sleep at La Cava tonight & go to see Paestum tomorrow. I went out after breakfast—to the straw shop & to tell Sir Charles Newton that we were off. I found him in the reading room at the Hotel des Etrangers & we had a little talk after which went back to the Hotel Bristol. Just as we were going in to lunch we discovered Mr & Mrs Watts who had just come to this hotel from the Hotel Nobile as they wanted this view. He had been very ill at Malta & is staying here on his way to the Riviera. We said we hoped to see him on our return on Monday or Tuesday & we went by a train abt 1.20 & arrived at La Cava at 3. Ola said she did not feel very well again but still thought she would like to try a walk. We were at the Hotel de Londres a very good hotel & civil landlord. We got as far as a village opposite side of the valley when Ola thought she must get home—so we hurried back to the hotel & I got her into bed & we slept together. She was so feverish that I got anxious & we determined to get her back to Naples tomorrow.
