26 February 1888 — La Cava
Sunday. 26th February [1888]. Ola seemed so much better that instead of returning with her to Naples by the fast train—I arranged to go with Henry to Paestum. We took a basket of provisions with us– I got Ola up & packed everything & then arranged that Luigi shd take Ola back to Naples by the middle day fast train. Our train went at 10.27. We had very fine rather hot weather. We had to change at Battipaglia for Pesto & got there at 12.35. We passed fields of narcissus in flower. The station of Pesto is 10 min walk from the temples & we walked thro the ancient archway & soon found ourselves in front of the fine ruins wh were quite astounding & beautiful. We found there amongst a party of tourists was Miss McClellan the American girl who had repaid the kindness of everybody at Venice by publishing an illnatured acct of us in the American paper. We walked on to the 3rd temple & then towards the old walls & a gate way & then back to the station. At the 3rd temple (of Ceres) I found most beautiful wild sweet violets & picked them & also some wild hyacinths (grape). We went back to the station at 2.45 & then began to have some luncheon. I had no sooner taken it than I began to have a sick headache & suffered a great deal till we got back to Naples being very sick out of the window. At Pompei an English couple got in who were very much disgusted at finding a lady lying up on the seat but I was past minding them & amused at their talk. The man said he supposed I was ill & how he pitied a man who had an invalid wife & that it must be a fearful drawback &c &c. He again said I reminded him of a lady with whom they had traveled coming over from England who had also laid up on the seat & was a French woman & a very disagreeable woman! However we reached Naples at last altho the train was slow & the time was interminable. Henry got me into a carrozzella at once & we got to the Hotel Bristol at 7.45 to find Ola in bed. We had not the same apartment as the last & Ola was sleeping in the anteroom of the sitting room– Another room was promised us the next day. At 8 Dr Malbrane came (145 Rione Amedeo) as Luigi had by our orders asked him to do. He found that Ola had a great deal of fever & her temperature was up to 104º. He ordered her something & said he would return in the morng. He is a german. A thin man of 40—talks English fluently & talks a good deal. I was very sick again & had to get into bed & leave Ola to Gigia.
