9 March 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 9th [March 1888]. The Emperor is dead! Malcolm sent us over word about 12 oclock. This mornings papers say that the Crown P. is going to start Saturday to see his father—this journey at this time of year is a terrible one in his state. Poor man! how long will he survive his father? Miss Ames came to see me, brought me back the books I lent her & took others. Audrey Trevelyan came to play the guitar with me at 12 till lunch. We took her home & then Henry & I went in gondola to the Lido & took a walk on the shore where we met Lady Galway. Today is our 19th wedding day & we were happy to go & take a walk together. Mme Hurtado came to see me at 5.30 & stayed a long time. At 9.30 we went to the Canevaros & Henry played whist & we returned home at 11.30. Everybody smoked there & it was not very lively.
