21 March 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 21st March [1888]. Ola up for 3 hours in the studio. Audrey Trevelyan came to play the guitar with me & stayed to lunch– I went at 3 with Mr Jameson to Marzials to look at the room he has offered us for the English service—after waiting some time at the door I was admitted. Mr Jameson had gone in & tydied up Marzials—in a fashion but he was still very unkempt. We had to go through the kitchen to get to the sitting room which was fairly comfortable– We went over the palazzo (Friuli) & there are some fine rooms & pretty stucco ornamentations but all were in course of repair. He took us to see his sanctum where he lives & composes his music. A large empty room—with paper half torn off the walls. In one corner a divan, a table & a fine piano strewed with music & thick in dust. This is where he lives lying down on the divan when he feels to want to sleep! We returned to the living room & had an excellent cup of tea & then went on our ways. Met there his friend a young violinist of the name of Sillence—a nice quite young man—clean & in his right mind. Mr Jameson & I went on to Campo Sa Trinita to see another room in an old palace which has been a very fine one & where there were splendid rooms. Only it is very far being behind the Arsenal. Mr Jameson left me at Campo S. Via & sent me on home in his gondola. Dined alone. Mr Marzials came in for an hour at 9 & at 10 Henry & I went to a party at the Palazzo Vendramin the Dss della Grazia’s where were a good many of the Italians.
