9 April 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 9th April [1888]. Cortelazzo returned home. Css Brandolin came at 11 to learn some work. Miss Lewis & her sister Mrs Howe & Mr Howe the brother in law came also to see the pictures. Mr Brown & Mr Symonds came to lunch as Ld Selborne wished to meet the latter– Henry took Ld S. & Lady Sophia to the Armenian Convent & as soon as they returned Lady Sophia, Mr Gordon & I went to tea with Mr Marzials. We were very late. He expected us; showed us over the house & was very amusing. He was writing in Lady Sophia’s album when Mr Sillence took us in to tea in the next room– In sitting down the seat of my chair not being fixed it turned & I slid onto the ground. I laughed so that they could hardly drag me up– Marzials flew in at the noise saying to Mr Sillence “My darling child what has happened” & on finding me under the table he added “Let all the men leave the room” I assured him I was not hurt or faint & to prove it eat 5 different sorts of jam! & we went home very merry. Lady Galway dined with us & Mr Marzials & Sillence came in the evening.
