19 April 1888 — Paris | |
Thursday. 19th [April 1888]. Took a walk with Henry in the morning. Home to lunch at 1. At 2 he & I went out again in a fiacre to the dressmakers & on to the Embassy to call on Mr Atlee. Coming away we meet a Boulangist crowd running & screaming—but they seemed to be a pack of idle good humoured youths. As we passed by the Place de la Concorde we saw there was a large crowd assembled to see Boulanger pass in the chambers to take his seat. Henry dropped me near our hotel & I fetched Ola & we walked together to the Palais Royal to flañer. Coming back by the Rue de Rivoli we met a crowd pursuing a carriage wh we supposed to contain Boulanger. We were rather frightened & took refuge in a day shop. The good woman declared there was no danger but went in & shut her door. Workmen & idlers continued to run by shouting & singing Boulangist songs & we were glad to get back to our hotel & look out from the safe distance of an upper window. Soon after Lord Lytton called on his way back from the Chambers & said all had gone off quietly & the Govt had won a vote of confidence by a great majority & the Chambers had adjourned till Saturday. We dined at 6.30 & walked to the Vaudeville & saw a most amusing piece “Les Surprises du Divorce” very well played. Ola went to the Cafe Grand to dine with Dacre & hear the Hungarian band. | |
