8 May 1888 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 8th May [1888]. I arranged my self in the new morng room & sat there to read. Very fine day. Mama came in & also Maria & Nela– The latter stayed to luncheon. Mrs Hamilton came to luncheon. Maria returned & we took her with us to the New Gallery which has been set going in opposition to the Grosvenor Gallery by Sir Coutt’s late Secy Mr C. Hallé & Mr Sydney Colvin. It is beautifully arranged & all the best pictures of the year are there. We met lots of people we know. Afterwards we took a turn in the Park & then I returned to tea. Nela who had been walking with Gigia returned to tea & then helped me to arrange my diamonds to wear tonight. We dined with Mr & Mrs Ralph Sneyd 53 Rutland Place. Met Genl & Mrs Arthur Ellis. He took me to dinner & I had an old Genl Gordon on my left. I went on to Cornelia’s ball at Hamilton House. It is the first they give in a ball room just built. It is very handsome & lighted by electricity. I saw a great many people I know & remained till nearly 1. Pss Mary of Teck were there—also Prince Albert Victor. Pss Mary said she had been dining with the Queen who had rather a better account of the Emperor who does not actually suffer.
