9 May 1888 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 9th [May 1888]. Practised guitar. Ola came & I read aloud to her. Henry went to lunch with Rothschild. Mr Lewis came to lunch with me. Sir Wm & Lady Gregory also dropped in. Ola & I drove together. Saw people coming back from the drawing room. Went to Gorringes & drove in the Park & then went to tea at Park Crescent. Walked back with Maria to see Blanche who walked round here with me. I went to dine with Mrs Kay, met Mr Kegan Paul & wife, Mr & Mrs Ralph Dutton, Browning &c. Mr Dutton took me down & I sat by Browning who told me much about the Byron family—how Lord Wentworth had had printed last year & shown to him the letters proving what a blackguard Byron had been—how Lady B could not possibly live with him. What a horrid woman Mrs Leigh was—& how dreadfully her 3 daughters had turned out.
