21 May 1888 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 21st [May 1888]. Whit Monday. Bank holiday. Henry, Kate, Eda & I drove off at 12 to Wimbledon to lunch with old John Murray at Newstead. Lovely weather & the lilacs were out in profusion so that dirty ugly London looked quite pretty. Ola Du Cane was there having driven down– Alice & Hallam were also there. We sat out in the garden & enjoyed the country wh owing to the E. wind was not so pretty as it might have been. At 5 we set off to drive back. Henry & I dined next door at No 3 with Lady Hotham & met Bishop Perry & wife, Adl Fanshawe & Lady Fanshawe & Lady Hotham’s nephew & niece– As we were formally introduced to each other the funniest confusion arose & we had to tell each other who we were. It is a stupid English habit that of not introducing each other in a London drawing room.
