28 August 1888 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 28th August [1888]. Mr Rate called about 10 just as we sat down to breakfast. He had just arrived from the continent & came to see after us. Richard Du Cane also called. He being in town alone & we begged him to come & dine. At 12 Henry & I went off to see the house 6 Montague Place he has inherited from Mrs Austen his aunt. Fred met us there & Mr Harding the lawyer. There is some good furniture & nice plate & some oil paintings. We returned here to lunch & Fred with us. Henry went off to the city. I walked in a downpour of rain to Dover St to consult Mr Burton as I am not yet over the chill I got in Norway. It was so wet I had to come back in a cab. Had tea. Wrote letters. Richard Du Cane, Fred, Rayd & Leo dined with us & left about 10.30.
