1 December 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 1st December [1888]. Dark & wet all the morning so that there was no painting. I copied Disraeli’s letters most of the morning. After lunch Ola & I went to the church practise & then picked up Henry & Nela at the Piazza. Our servant Luigi Gussoni left us today after 5 years’ service much to our regret. He was overcome to tears on departing & I think regrets the step he has taken. A new man, one Emilio, has arrived & took possession. Mlle de Mysenberg came to tea & to pour out the sorrows of the friends of B. Warsberg on the fiasco of Thursday. I consoled her by telling her it was not such an affair of state, that it would blow over, that there was nothing to be done only he must not repeat it. Then came M. Klatzo & we discussed it over again. They both said that Warsberg had been entirely in the wrong & begged me to help to smooth matters. The Childe Pembertons came to tea & went up with Nela to see my studio during the discussion. We dined at 7 & went to the Rossini to see “Lucrezia Borgia” by Donizetti, very well given & Nanetti a Venetian basso sang & acted very well.
