21 December 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 21st [December 1888]. Finished my letter for the Empress. Sent for Rietti to ask him to lend us a frame for our tableaux on Christmas Day which he kindly promises to do. Mrs Browning came to see me up in the studio before lunch. After lunch Henry, Mr Malcolm & I went to the fumista to see a new stove for the hall as we must change the large iron one for coke wh is too powerful. Then Henry & I went on in search of Christmas presents &c & came round to the Piazza on foot. Went into Merini’s shop & inspected it & saw old Vittoria Tranquilli who is working there. Called on Mrs Curtis & found her at home. Came home to tea & helped Mr Jameson & Mr Woods who were fixing up the curtains for the tableaux. Mr Brown dined with us. Nela still in bed Henry went up & played patience in her room after dinner. Ola played the piano to Mr Brown & me–
