1 January 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 1st January 1889. The girls got up & went to church at 10.30 but I remained in bed till lunch & read R. Rod’s Life of the Emperor Frederick. Mr Brown came to lunch & directly after he took me off to the Lido in his sandolo. It was a mild day & rather dull. We landed at the King’s House at the Quattro Fontane—an unfurnished chalet which was a jot & was to have been built for a summer residence for V. Emmanuel. The rest of the party were to go in gondola to the Arsenal & there find a steam launch to bring them to the Lido with Mr Moore the Adl’s stepson in command. Mr Brown & I landed & watched for the others. The tide was very low & they had to leave the steam launch & come by gondola to land wh having towed it they did, but we lost sight of them & found they had landed & gone ahead. However by running we caught them up on the shore & took a brisk walk which revived us after our late hours of last night. Ola came back with me in the sandolo & we arrived at the same time as the launch. The water was so low that the latter got aground not far from our door & was ½ hour before it got off. Mr Moore came in to tea. We dined at 7. Mr Brown dined with us & he went with Henry & the girls to the theatre to see Carmen. I to bed.
