6 January 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 6th January [1889]. It being the Greek Christmas Day I went to the Greek Church with the Princess of Montenegro & her daughter. It was a fine & impressive service & everybody seemed very reverential—far more so than in a Catholic Church. What struck me as odd was that everybody began to shake hands and talk in the church directly the service was over. The music without organ & in 4 part voices might have been fine but was not very well sung. We were late for the service & it was also a short one. After lunch I went to church with the girls & afterwards I sent to see Carry Eden who returned this morning from London. The girls went to tea with Mrs Brown—Olga Mocenigo came to tea & invited Ola to go to the Opera with her wh she did. Lady Galway dined with us. I played the harmonium–
