7 January 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 7th January [1889]. Gave out stores. Prepared for modelling & worked till lunch. Afterwards Mrs Browning called for me & took me with her to their Rezzonico Palace & showed me all over it. The mezzanine rooms in wh they intend to live at first are small & comfortable but the rest is a huge waste a sort of town. There were workmen at work in every part of the house & I expect the Brownings will be startled when they see the bill they will have to pay! On the upper floors in the time of the Austrians a company of soldiers had been quartered & in one room there is still painted on the door 12 M. denoting the number appointed to sleep there. In another there is a great oven for baking bread for rations wh on acct of its great weight Mr Browning is having taken down. We spent nearly 2 hours going over the palace & then I walked home, arranged our rooms for receiving & then rested on the studio divan & had tea. The Edens dined with us. A good many people came—but we did not dance & so were not late.
