30 January 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 30th [January 1889]. I had my 6th & last harmonium lesson & then practised guitar for the afternoon’s practise to wh all came as usual. It being Mrs Bronson’s evening of reception I took Ola there. There were a good many people the D & Dss della Grazia, Pss of Montenegro, Andrians & then came D. Carlos himself. Everybody as usual smoked, & it was very hot in the small rooms & not very lively when suddenly in came Mr Fred Smart with terrible news wh caused a stir & a move. D. Carlos got up & left the house at once– The news of the sudden death of the young Arch Duke Rudolph from apoplexy. Everybody was horrified—& Mrs Bronson was very cross at having her party broken up– Mme Andrian rushed forward & tried to argue that it cd not be true at wh Mr Smart got nettled & was so cross & rude that I, who was standing between them moved off & left them arguing. But I soon fell into another group Mrs Bronson scolding Mr Smart for having brought the news at all & this spoiling her party. The harmony of the evening being spoilt we were all glad to go home & I hastened with the news for Henry who was gone to bed.
