31 January 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 31st January [1889]. Henry & I took a walk in the afternoon. The girls went out in the sandolo & I came in at 4 & went in gondola to Mme Pandolfi’s where I was specially invited to hear 2 young ladies Ferrari sing & play. It was so painful that I escaped from the ordeal as soon as possible. I met Mrs Browning there & brought her home to tea with me. There was to have been a party at Bss Andrian wh was of course put off on acct of the Crown Prince of Austria’s health. But she begged me to go there in the eveng. Lady Galway was to have spent the evening with us & came at 9 but I met her at our door & carried her off with me to the Andrians. Met Css Canevaro & Mr Smart there & later Bn. Warsberg. There was no details yet of the death of the Prince but there seems to be a general impression abroad that he did not die a natural death. Some now talk of a gun accident.
