1 February 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 1st February [1889]. Ola sat to me for her bust in the morning. Mrs Eden came here directly after lunch & we went walking together & paid visits. We called on Bss Mayneri whose day it was & then walked to the Css Morosini’s at the Ca Dòro also her day & her drawing room was full. The talked turned on Mme Nevada & many untrue & ill natured things were said—that she was not really ill—that she wd not sing unless for more money &c &c I contradicted them & did what I cd to put it straight. Mme Noce was there & I persuaded her to come home to tea with us & we had Ct Barbaron & an officer also to tea. Mr Brown & his friend Mr Eliot (a secy at St Petersburg) dined with us. We had our Trios & Tirendelli played very well– Very few people came.
