11 April 1889 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 11th April [1889]. It began very foggy & dark abt 8 A.M. & then cleared again & but again got dark abt 11—read & wrote– Fred came to lunch at 1 & he & Henry drove down to Christie’s & when Henry came back at 5 he announced a splendid sale realizing £11450. These small Turners having fetched £1000 & a Copley Fielding over £800. I drove up to 25 Park Crescent & offered to take out Maria & Ola & Nela also came. We left cards & returned home to tea. Maria went home, the girls stayed here to tea. At 6 went to dress in order to let the maid go to the theatre– Mrs Rate came to call but I took her up to assist at my toilet. We dined at Wimborne House—a large dreary dinner. I sat between Mr Beresford Hope & Mr Cavendish neither very intelligent nor amusing– Amateur music after Evely played the Cello very well. A Mr played violin excellently, very fine tone—but man a snob evidently. Blanche sang very prettily.
