10 August 1889 — Spondinig
Saturday. 10th [August 1889]. Left Spondinig abt 8 A.M. & drove to Meran having sent some of our heavy luggage on by a cart as the road was so bad as a great deal of it being in act of being made. A lovely day & very hot. We got more & more into Italian vegetation. Close to Meran we passed Mr Hulton driving up to Schluderns to see the Browns. Got to Meran abt 12 deposited our luggage & then got luncheon at an hotel hard by– By a mistake we separated, Henry & I lunched at a different place to the rest but we all got back together at the station & left by 1.50 train for Botzen. It was tremendously hot. Went to H. Viktoria at Botzen opposite the station—very comfortable but perfectly empty– Went for a walk in the town with Dacre & the girls. Henry stayed in & read his newspapers wh being full of the “Maybrick” case are interesting. Mrs M. found “guilty” & sentenced to death. It seems to be causing great excitement in England. Dined at 7.
