11 August 1889 — Botzen
Sunday. 11th August [1889]. There was a tremendous thunderstorm in the night which cooled the air. We left by 8.30 train & went to Franzensfeste. Waited an hour there & went on by train to Toblach– Found a carriage from Landro sent to fetch us. After arranging luggage &c we went to the big hotel there & got luncheon. It began to rain & to be cold. Dacre & Ola walked up to Landro & the rest of us drove. We went thro’ blinding torrents of rain. At Toblach Hotel we met Signor Guccio the late Editor of the Gazetta di Venezia who now resides at Milan. The big hotel was crammed but he alone we knew. At Landro we were met by the D. & Dss of Sermoneta who were very cordial & had secured us charming rooms at Baur’s hotel. We had a balcony with a beautiful view up the valley to the Cristalgruppe. We had some tea & put on warm clothes as it was very cold. The Sermonetas are spending the summer here with their children. The Duchess is always charming & still beautiful & very kind. We had our places next them at the table d’hôte wh was very pleasant & sat with them chatting in their room till 10 in the evening.
