4 September 1889 — Torre Pellice
Wednesday. 4th September [1889]. Read aloud—worked. Lunched at 12.30. Went for a walk with Henry as far as the cemetery. Threatened rain but it kept off. At 6.15 drove to Villa Ollanda to dine with M. & Mme Peyrot & M. & Mme Meille. Met there several English clergymen. Mr Mathews who had been living in Canada sat next to me. Mr Henri Meille took me to dinner. The two sisters Mmes Meille & Peyrot sat opposite each other in the middle of the table & Mme Meille did the serving with a napkin pinned up in front of her. M. & Mme Prochet dined also, a Mr & Mrs Guthrie & others. In the middle of dinner the storm burst & there was a deluge of rain. Mr Guillaume Meille drank our healths to wh Henry answered shortly. Directly after coffee we went down to the town to the meeting at the new Maison Vaudoise of the Societé d’Histoire Vaudoise & as it was raining we took Mme Peyrot down with us in the carriage. It was quite a deluge. There were several interesting speeches made & Henry led off in French. It was about 11 when we got back to the “Ours” & we sent back our carriage for Mme Peyrot.
