13 October 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 13th [October 1889]. The girls went to Church at the new building wh was opened for service on 29th Septr. Henry did not wish me to go as he feared it might be damp. I stayed in bed till lunch– I had a visit from Mrs Eden & Miss Maud Valerie White & her sister– The latter want us to give them letters for Consple as Miss Maud White is going to take her sister a tour to Palermo, Consple, Vienna & St Petersburg as the sister is going to marry & settle in Chile & she wants her to see Europe & is going to pay the expenses instead of giving her a wedding present. Mr Blumenthal the composer & his wife called at our door but did not come in. Mr Cartwright came this morng to tell Henry that Cavaliere Cook had died suddenly at the Grand Hotel & left debts & no money to bury him—& the Hotel keeper wants to send to the Municipio to bury him as a pauper. Henry agreed to help to pay for a proper funeral & Mr Cartwright is to see to it. Mr Jameson called on us later & said he had made all the arrangements. Mr Cartwright & Mr Malcolm dined with us.
