28 October 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 28th [October 1889]. Painted with Nela all the morning. Went out with Henry in gondola to Biraghi’s & leave some cards but had to hasten home on acct of rain. The girls went to Lido by steamer. Miss Vansittart Frere came to tea having brought letters for us– Rather affected & unattractive– Mr Jameson came also. Our servant Luigi Gussoni who had left us in the last autumn & returned in Octr left us for the 2nd time under the plea that his wife was ill & could not live at Venice. A new man Paolo who was to replace him did not arrive as we expected.
