5 November 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 5th [November 1889]. Painted & modelled till lunch. Afterwards the girls went to the Lido and I in gondola with Henry. Left cards & walked a little on Piazza with him– Tea in my room & was just going to read to Henry when 2 Miss Barclays called who are staying with Mrs Browning & then the Princess of Montenegro & her sister & daughter & she stayed so long that I had only time to read ½ hour as the dinner was at 7 that Henry might take the girls to Rossini theatre to see Belisarius by Donizetti. I went to dine with the Edens quite alone & returned at 10.15. Today is Guy Fawkes Day wh is hardly kept now in England. Mr Eden told me that when he was an Eton boy the great fête kept there was Charles the Martyr. Every boy went to morning chapel with an oak leaf in his pocket & when the clock struck 12 during the service each boy cast his leaf on the floor. The masters at last put down the custom by appealing to the boys & representing that it was not conducive to piety & attention to the service.
