8 November 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 8th November [1889]. Up at 7. Practised guitar before breakfast. Wrote letters till 12; modelled. Just before Sir F. Burton made his appearance & we found he was at the hotel. We were furious & much hurt & had a great argument with him trying to persuade him to come at once to us. He fought against it until at last he & I made a compromise & going down on his knees before me he promised to move here from the hotel tomorrow. Henry took him out in gondola in afternoon. I walked & went to see Mrs Browning & then on to the Edens garden crossing the Giudecca traghetto. I found the Edens at the garden & Mr Eden gave me some flowers. Idita Bent. came there & brought me home in her gondola. It was a splendid day & a lovely evening. The girls walked to the E. gardens & returned in the E. steamer. Mr & Miss Browning dined with us & Mrs & Mr Hulton & Sir Frederic Burton & Mr Woods– Nela dined upstairs.
