15 November 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 15th [November 1889]. Henry & the 3 girls went to Padua by 9.15 train & returned abt 4. I & Sir Fred. breakfasted at 9 & then I went out in the steam launch with Mr Eden. It was a splendid morning, brilliant sunshine & as we went away from Venice it looked like a beautiful dream thro’ a soft blue haze– We went beyond the Lido & saw a man shoot a diver wh fell but disappeared & tho’ we went about looking for it & the man in his little boat the cunning little creature managed to elude us. The sailing boats with their picturesque coloured sails beyond the Lido were quite pictures. We returned to Venice by 12 & I breakfasted with the Edens & their friend Dr Bird & sat working after lunch till 2 when they took me over to their garden & Carrie & I picked a lot of flowers for me to bring home. There were still chrysanthemums but nearly over, and a good many roses. We also harvested a large bundle of lavender wh had produced a 2nd crop owing to the warmth of the season– They brought me home at 4.30. Mr Jameson came to tea also Mrs DuGué. She said her husband who had been & is still very ill was better & they start for Cairo next Friday. Read aloud to Henry. Mr Malcolm, Mr Brown & his friend Mr Allen came to dinner & afterwards the latter played the piano charmingly.
