19 November 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 19th November [1889]. Another splendid day. Copied for Henry & worked a little at bust– At 1 dressed & we all 5 went to lunch with Mrs Brown to see the alterations & improvements to their house which are certainly great. Henry & I came home at 3 & I wrote a couple of letters. The girls walked to Mrs Curtis & we after leaving a few cards joined them soon after 4 & found a whole assembly of people collected to hear old Browning read his new unpublished poems. He read until it was quite dark and then a light was brought. The Montalba girls who were there were in ecstasies & Mrs Bronson & Mrs Hulton also. Mrs Eden & I agreed that we could not feel that it was real poetry. He does not read very well either & drops his voice too suddenly. He read at end a long poem abt Fo. Romanelli– We had tea & then returned home. I had time to read aloud for an hour to Henry before dinner & went early to bed.
